Reflections
49 Years. 49 Lessons. And I Still Don't Know Everything.
Today I turned 49, and I've been thinking about everything these years have taught me.
Some lessons came from books. Some came from building businesses. Some came from marriage, motherhood, and the people in my life. And some cost me money, tears, friendships, and a whole lot of unnecessary stress.
But I learned.
Some of these I learned early. Some took me entirely too long. A few I'm still working on. Here's what 49 years have taught me.
Life
- 1
Your beginning doesn't decide your ending.
I'm proof of that.
- 2
Surviving and living are two different things.
I spent enough years surviving. Now I'm making sure I enjoy my life.
- 3
Everybody isn't going to like you.
You can still have an amazing life.
- 4
Being misunderstood isn't the end of the world.
Some people just won't get you. Keep moving.
- 5
You're allowed to change your mind.
About people, careers, goals, and the life you thought you wanted.
- 6
Stop waiting for special occasions.
Wear the outfit. Take the trip. Order the good food. Celebrate on a random Tuesday.
- 7
Life is happening while you're making plans.
Don't miss what's right in front of you.
Lesson 8
Not everything has to be a lesson.
Sometimes I just had a good time. That's the post.
- 9
Getting older is a privilege.
Especially when you've lost people you thought would always be here.
- 10
You can be proud of yourself and still have work to do.
Both are true.
Business
- 11
Being good at what you do doesn't mean you know how to run a business.
Two completely different skill sets.
- 12
Revenue is not profit.
A million-dollar business can still have million-dollar problems.
- 13
If everything requires you, you didn't build a business.
You built yourself a very demanding job.
- 14
Hiring people isn't the same as delegating.
If you're still making every decision, what's the point?
Lesson 15
You can't outwork a broken system.
Trust me, I tried.
- 16
Growth will expose every weakness in your business.
Especially the ones you've been ignoring.
- 17
Not every opportunity is a good one.
Some of my most expensive lessons looked exciting at first.
- 18
You can love your business without letting it eat your whole life.
Still working on this one.
- 19
Being the CEO doesn't mean knowing everything.
It means getting the right people and information in place.
- 20
The business you started may not be the business you need to keep building.
Let the vision change.
Leadership
- 21
A title doesn't make you a leader.
Your behavior does.
- 22
You can care about people and still hold them accountable.
- 23
Not everybody who works with you will grow with you.
Even the ones you really wanted to see win.
Lesson 24
You can't want it more for somebody than they want it for themselves.
Whew. This one.
- 25
Nice and effective aren't the same thing.
Neither are direct and disrespectful.
- 26
Loyalty isn't the same as longevity.
Being around a long time doesn't mean it's still working.
- 27
People need clarity, not mind-reading assignments.
Say what you expect. Then follow through.
- 28
Hard conversations get harder the longer you wait.
Have the conversation.
Love, Marriage & Family
- 29
Marriage is a choice you keep making.
Not something you decided once.
- 30
You can love somebody and still get on each other's last nerve.
Marriage will teach you that.
- 31
Your relationship doesn't have to make sense to anybody else.
It has to work for the two people in it.
- 32
Your kids grow into adults with their own lives.
Your job changes. Your love doesn't.
- 33
Family needs boundaries too.
Being related doesn't cancel out respect.
- 34
Make memories with your people.
Take the pictures. Go dancing. You won't always get another chance.
- 35
Love isn't always loud.
Sometimes it's just showing up, again and again.
Money & Freedom
- 36
Money gives you options.
Options change your whole relationship with life.
- 37
Looking successful and being financially healthy are not the same thing.
- 38
More revenue doesn't fix bad decisions.
It just makes them bigger.
- 39
Success looks different at every stage.
What impressed me at 29 doesn't impress me at 49.
- 40
Freedom is worth building toward.
Freedom with your money, your time, and your energy.
People, Boundaries & Everything Else
Lesson 41
Some people only like the version of you they can control.
Let them be disappointed.
- 42
You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to.
Do I always remember this? Absolutely not.
- 43
Changing your opinion isn't hypocrisy.
It's called learning.
Lesson 44
Stop explaining yourself to people committed to misunderstanding you.
You could bring a PowerPoint and three references. Still wouldn't matter.
- 45
You might be a lot for some people.
That's okay. Everybody has a different capacity.
- 46
Rest doesn't have to be earned.
You can sit down because you want to.
- 47
Joy doesn't need a big budget.
A good meal, the right song, and laughing with somebody you love.
- 48
There's no award for doing everything yourself.
Ask for help. Let people show up for you.
Lesson 49
You don't have to spend the rest of your life proving what you can do.
At some point, you get to enjoy what you built.
I don't have it all figured out. But I've figured out enough to know I want to spend more time living and less time proving.
Here's to 49. And to everything between now and 50.
Same girl. Bigger purpose.
